WILLIAMSON COUNTY (WSIL) -- Thursday night, line the procession route for fallen officer Volunteers took the time to place them.
The officer, with Southern Illinois ties, was killed in the line of duty last week.
Dozens of people came out to John A. Logan College to help a group called to put up nearly 2,500 flags around the funeral route for fallen officer Brian Pierce Junior.
Families, veterans, police officers and more pitched in.
"I've been a veteran, I appreciate veterans and I appreciate the law officers and want to help remember the officer that was killed," said volunteer, Henry Kammerer.
The funeral route will begin at John A. Logan College and turn onto Greenbriar Road before heading onto eastbound Route 13.The procession will head north on Route 148 for five miles until it reaches Herrin Road. There, the procession heads west to Cambria Road ahead of the final turn into Blairsville Cemetery.
Volunteers of all ages say they wanted to help honor Officer Pierce and his family.
"It makes me feel good to be out here and help, just show our respect to him and all these other officers," said volunteer, Connor Craig.
Other volunteers say they wish it didn't take a death to bring the community together, but say putting up the flags is a small thing in comparison to the sacrifice Officer Pierce made.
"He was a small town police officer in you know, Spillertown, and moved on up. Anything that we can do to show support law enforcement for everything they do for us is awesome," said volunteer, Mark Rogers.
The group also needs volunteers to take down the flags. Volunteers can meet at the John A. Logan parking lot Sunday at Noon. Volunteers can call 618-409-0323.
