Franklin County declares disaster after Sunday ice storm

BENTON, Ill. (WSIL) -- The Franklin County Government declared a disaster after the ice storm hit the area on Sunday, January 5.

The Franklin County Board Chairman Neil Hargis declared Franklin County a disaster due to severe winter weather conditions which include heavy ice accumulations and dangerously low temps.

The damage from the winter storm includes property damage, power outages, significant disruptions to transportation and posed a threat to safety and welfare of residents, Hargis stated.

Hargis also said local response and resources for recovery have been or are expected to be overwhelmed due to the impact from the winter storm. The county also had to add additional recovery support due to the storm as well.

The declaration is in effect starting January 10, 2025 and will expire on January 17, 2025.
