Shopping online this holiday season? Why you need to protect yourself

While millions of Americans will be looking for the best deals the internet has to offer, cyber criminals will be hard at work looking to target online shoppers.

BENTON, Ky. -- The Marshall County Sheriff's Office hopes to make receiving online purchases from locals a safer process.

The department launched an official space for the exchanges to take place in the its parking lot. Officials have installed cameras around the lot for 24/7 surveillance.

Signs point out the section of the parking lot where residents should conduct their business. Buyers and sellers can each use the spot.

"Technology and the internet have changed the landscape of peer to peer commerce. Purchasing an item from an unknown individual online has often led people to meet strangers in unknown locations that may not be safe," said Judge Executive Kevin Spraggs. "We are proud to support this effort to give our residents a safe place for these transactions to take place."

The office says the high number of related crimes the team has come across inspired them to make this.

The new safety spot is open at all times for anyone to use.
