Kentucky State Police investigate officer-involved shooting in Murray; one in custody

MURRAY, Ky. (WSIL) -- UPDATE: June 17, 11:59 a.m. -- Murray Police Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Eric Saxton, a 23-year-old from Benton, Kentucky. Saxton was cited with attempted murder of a first responder, possession of meth, and possession of drug paraphernalia charges, Murray Police reported.

Police said officers in Tennessee arrested Saxton after his release from a medical facility. He was then taken to a Tennessee jail while awaiting extradition to Kentucky.

The Kentucky State Police is continuing to investigate the officer-involved shooting. The officer involved was placed on administrative leave, following the Murray Police Department's policies and procedures.

ORIGINAL: June 17, 7:01 a.m. -- The Murray Police Department responded to a report of a man armed with a knife at an apartment complex on Brooklyn Drive on June 16.

Officers said they arrived at approximately 11:45 p.m. and found the suspect alone inside an apartment. Police said the individual exited and charged at officers with a knife, prompting a Murray Police officer to discharge his weapon, striking the suspect.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Murray-Calloway County Hospital for treatment.

The Kentucky State Police are conducting an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting as per Murray Police Department policies. Additionally, Murray Police Department detectives are investigating the suspect's actions.
