PADUCAH, Ky. (WSIL)--- Crews from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet are out making sure conditions on the road are safe.

鈥淲e鈥檙e hoping we can get enough done overnight tonight and during the day tomorrow,鈥 Keith Todd, KYTC鈥檚 Public Information officer, said.

He says District 1 has been paying attention to the forecast.

鈥淲e鈥檙e looking at maybe one inch of snow along our Ohio River border counties, possibly as much as three inches along our Tennessee border counties,鈥 Todd said.

Todd says they are concerned about the cold temperature affecting the roads.

鈥淲e鈥檙e looking at a windshield of a minus ten or a minus 20,鈥 Todd said.

He says the cold can make it dangerous for drivers.

鈥淎nything as simple as a flat tire or a dead battery that might be an inconvenience normally can very quickly become a life-threatening situation,鈥 Todd says. 鈥淪o, if you are going out, be fully prepared.鈥

While the roads were clear, some Kentucky residents were already preparing for the cold by putting air in their tires.

鈥淎ll four of them were a little low from the extreme cold temperatures. So thought rather safe than sorry, fill them up,鈥 Ryan Daily said between putting air in his tires.

Others were filling up gas and stopping for food.

鈥淕ot milk, eggs, bread, and lots of snacks and everything for the kids,鈥 Luke Melcher said.

Todd says people should expect the snow to be here for a while.

鈥淏e aware that if you do venture out, it鈥檚 gonna take us a while to get the roads clear,鈥 Todd said.

He says the salt and ice-fighting chemicals can be ineffective when the temperature is below 15 degrees.

鈥淪o it鈥檚 going to limit the ability of our crews to improve driving conditions much for the next several days,鈥 Todd said.

Todd says the gives real-time updates about road conditions and blockages.

鈥淲e also recommend that people use the Waze app,鈥 Todd says. 鈥淭hat app has real-time information, and if there鈥檚 a crash ahead that鈥檚 blocking the road, it will actually give you a detour on a way to go around sometimes.鈥
