Carbondale man found guilty in 2023 murder case

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (WSIL) -- A 39-year-old man from Carbondale was found guilty of murder in connection to a 2023 murder case out of Carbondale.

Jackson County State's Attorney Marsha Cascio-Hale said Dewayne Jones Jr., 39 of Carbondale, was found guilty to murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm after a 5-day jury trial on April 4.

On April 28, 2023, officers with the Carbondale Police Department responded to the Field's Apartment complex along 700 South Lewis Lane at 10:53 p.m. for a shooting, authorities stated.

The victim in the shooting, who later died, was reported as Rayshaun L. Simon, 41 of Carbondale.

Jones could face a sentence between 45 years and natural life in the Illinois Department of Corrections, Cascio-Hale said.
