VA Caregivers Resource Fair

MARION, Ill. (WSIL) -- The Marion VA held two events to honor those who care for our local veterans on Friday.

Dozens came out to attend the Caregiver Resource Fair and the Caregiver Celebration on November 15. Many came to see what the resource fair had to offer. There were several booths which offered caregiver support, like nutrition or home services.

Ashley Baity is the Manager of the Caregiver support program. She said it's about reaching the people who need help.

"We just really value what caregivers do and we want to make sure that they are supported, and educated and really know what is available for them. That way they can be the best equipped to fulfill their caregiving role," said Baity.

The Marion VA also held their Caregiver Celebration event. Many came to talk, eat and have fun. We talked with Susie Tuggle, a Peer Mentor for the VA Caregiver Program. She explains what the celebration means to caregivers.

"They are so grateful to be able to connect with each other and know that people understand what they are going through," said Tuggle. "Our journeys are the same but they are different and how we take care of the veterans," Tuggle added. "The ones that I am with today say they are so glad to connect with other people that understand the journey."

The Marion VA offers caregiver meetings or phone calls anytime. Officials from the VA say if you have any questions about caregiver support, you can contact the Marion VA at 618-997-5311.
