Mt. Vernon apartment fire leaves one dead, another injured

MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (WSIL) -- An apartment fire on Tuesday resulted in one death and another person severely injured.

The Mount Vernon Fire Department stated the fire took place at 7:25 p.m. on June 24 at 504 Short Street Apartments.

The Mount Vernon Fire Department, with assistance from the Jefferson Fire Protection District, and other agencies, responded promptly to the fire. Their first unit arrived in less than three minutes and discovered the active blaze.

Firefighters from both departments conducted a quick search and rescue operation where they located one victim through a window, and another was found during a primary search and removed through the front door.

The victims were taken to Deaconess Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital. One was later pronounced dead, while the other was transferred to a burn center in St. Louis.

The Mount Vernon Fire Department expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and extended thoughts and prayers to the injured victim. They also thanked all assisting agencies for their support during the incident.
