JEFFERSON COUNTY (WSIL) -- Safety was a topic of discussion Thursday night at a Jefferson County board meeting. in July came to voice their concerns.

The family says all they care about is preventing another drowning from happening.

Shelby Mitchell went missing on July 17 after reports of her vehicle left the road on North Panzier Lane. Her body was recovered the next day.

Since then, the family tells News 3 they've requested to have a guard rail put up.

Thursday night, the board has filed a motion to put up guard rails as well as two automatic flashing warning lights for Panzier and Hall Lane.

The family says they're pleased with the decision, but will have to wait for final approval. News 3 also asked the board about the process of getting the guard rails.

"This is just the beginning, we're also pushing to have police officers trained better because we were treated very poorly. We were treated more like criminals than a grieving family and we're pushing for a boat because we have all these roads that flood," said Mitchell's mother, Tammy Phillips.

"The first meetings we've had, we've talked about guard rails, we've talked about warning lights, we've talked about systems and you just, you can't move, we can't do it in a 30-day time span. Even though we've ordered here tonight and we may vote Monday night to go ahead a purchase it, it's still going to be 30 or 60 days before we get parts and get them put up," said Jefferson County Board Chairman, Clifford Lindemann.

Phillips says she's having a meeting at the Jefferson County sheriff's office about the handling of their situation on Monday.

The board will have a vote to approve the motion on Monday.
