
(WSIL) -- Flash flooding has closed many roads across parts of 九游体育 Illinois Tuesday morning.

Rainfall amounts were observed topping 3" over a span of just a few hours, causing small creeks and streams to rise quickly.
The heaviest rain occurred in southern Hamilton County near Broughton where radar estimated more than 4.5" in just six hours. Flooding was also reported near Raleigh in Saline County.

Farther to the west, Zeigler and West Frankfort saw roads covered in water. A report was submitted to the National Weather Service from Zeigler at 6:56 a.m. of 2.92"


In Union County, law enforcement reported numerous roads were closed, some even washed out, mainly in rural areas near Anna and Jonesboro.
Flash flooding is one of the leading causes of weather-related deaths in the United States, many of which occur when vehicles are swept off the road. It's important to remember "Turn Around, Don't Drown".
According to the National Weather Service:
- Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars causing loss of control and possible stalling
- A foot of water will float many vehicles
- Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles including sport utility vehicles (SUV鈥檚) and pick-ups.
