(WSIL) -- The Cave-in-Rock Ferry will cease operations Saturday night around 6 p.m. due to floodwaters on KY 91. That water is approaching the landing zone in Crittenden County.
The ferry typically stops running when the Ohio River reaches 42 feet at the . Around 4 p.m. Saturday the river level was still below 40 feet. But operators are shutting the ferry down now because waters are "backing up from below."
Operator Lonnie Lewis tells the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet it is difficult to determine when the ferry might be able to operate again.
Some 500 vehicles typically use the ferry everyday. It connects KY 91 with Illinois Route 1.
