CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (WSIL) -- The state of Missouri ranks near the bottom compared to other states when it comes to Covid-19 vaccine distribution, according to a recent report from the Center for Disease Control.

However, Cape Girardeau County officials say they're currently number one in Missouri for issuing those vaccines.

At least 2,000 people signed up for Cape Girardeau County Public Health Department's vaccine event. It's largest one to date.

One of the volunteers told News 3 he's ready for the pandemic to be over with.

"There's people out there that are finally realizing that this really going on and it's really affecting people and I really didn't want to be one of those people affected by it," said John Taylor.

Taylor says his medical experience helped guide him to get

his shot.

"As a long time nurse I have a fairly good understanding of them importance vaccines and I know one of the things that's going to help with the Covid-19 crisis," he said.

With the help of the Missouri National Guard, Public Information Officer Maria Davis says the event went smoothly.

"It is so wonderful. What we have done today--our goal was to get 200 an hour and we're right on that goal and sometimes we're running early for appointments so we're really proud of where we are," she said.

Taylor as well as others will return in three weeks for his second dose. He hopes people will be encouraged to get a vaccine.

"Hardly even felt it all. I know my wife when she had hers had several days of sore arm and I'm sure I've got that to look forward to, but if that's the worst I'm going to experience compared to the potential of how sick I can get with Covid-19, I'd go with that in a heartbeat," he said.

Davis says there will be another vaccination clinic in the coming weeks, but she encourages people to sign up for as many waitlists as possible because of high demand.
