CARBONDALE (WSIL) The City of Carbondale will hold a virtual Memorial Day service this year.
The city typically hosts an in-person ceremony at Woodlawn Cemetery.
In a release Friday, the city said the virtual service will honor "the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice defending our nation."
The video will include a welcome by Carbondale Mayor Mike Henry, a reading of General Order #11 by Senator Dick Durbin, and the decoration of graves and markers by the Carbondale Police Department Honor Guard.
"While the cancellation of the live event was discouraging, we believe offering this virtual service is in the best interest of our community’s health and continues the annual tradition that was started more than 150 years ago," stated the city.
Carbondale's virtual Memorial Day service will be posted to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube at 10 a.m. Monday, May 25. The service will also play on loop on Mediacom Channel 16.
