DU QUOIN (WSIL) -- The city of Du Quoin is encouraging everyone to join an uplifting movement to support healthcare workers.
What started off as a simple post of gratitude for healthcare professionals working during the COVID-19 outbreak turned into a viral movement.
"I posted that on Facebook, which got over 350 likes and a bunch of comments. So, I just kind of expanded it to ask people to start putting the ribbons outside their house, on a light-pole or on the front porch," said Mayor Guy Alongi.
Citizens are placing red ribbons or bows on their homes and businesses.
"I think it's nice. I think it shows support and brings the community together in everybody's fight with this virus," said Toler's Do It Best owner Joan Toler.
The goal is to have 500 to 1,000 hung all over town by Monday night.
"We'll have 40 more hand-made bows that we will be putting on social media. We're going to put them in a box outside of city hall and if anybody wants to come by and pick up a red bow to place on their house or their business, they're going to be available," said Alongi.
Residents think this is an opportunity to shine a light on those who are risking their lives to help others.
"Those people who are out taking care of others and having to work on the front lines, I so admire them. I do hope they stay safe and I appreciate the efforts of Du Quoin to do that sort of thing," said Du Quoin resident Leanna Gray.
Mayor Guy Alongi hopes this brings communities closer together.
"You know, we're just trying to make something good out of something bad here. Just trying to keep people upbeat," he said.
Along with the ribbons, the mayor also encourages children to participate in the bear hunt challenge, to find teddy bears hidden around the city.
