SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WREX) � The latest surge of COVID-19 continues in Illinois.
The state saw an increase of cases, hospitalizations, deaths and vaccinations in the past week compared to the week before.
For instance, from Dec. 31-Jan. 6, the state reported 201,428 new cases of COVID-19. From Jan. 7-Jan. 13, the state reported 207,203 new cases.
One of the largest concerns from health officials with the most recent surge of the virus is the number of hospitalizations.
As of Thursday night, 7,320 people were in the hospital with the virus. As of Jan. 6, there were 7,096 people in the hospital with the virus.
Of those, 1,148 patients were in the ICU and 657 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators, both numbers slightly up from last week.Â
Health officials now say updated data shows almost 90% of hospitalizations in the state are not vaccinated. Â
As of Friday, Region 5, which includes most of southern Illinois, had 5 ICU beds available, according to IDPH data. The data does not show which hospitals have the open beds, however. In Region 5, 154 patients were hospitalized with COVID.
The number of COVID-19-related deaths also increased in the past week. 738 more people died in the past week from the virus, according to IDPH. From Dec. 31-Jan. 6, the state reported 444 deaths from the virus. Since the pandemic started, the state is now reporting 29,099 deaths.Â
Since the vaccine first became available in the first part of 2021, health officials have urged vaccinations. As of Friday, the state has administered 19,893,424 doses of the vaccines. In the last week, the state says they administered 357,487 doses of the vaccine, an increase from 264,687 does administered from Dec. 31-Jan. 6.Â
Of Illinois� total population, almost 74% has received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, 65% of Illinois� total population is fully vaccinated, and more than 42% boosted according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
