(CNN) - Facebook is using self-reported data from its users to track the coronavirus.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Washington Post op-ed the company is working with Carnegie Mellon University on the project.

The social media giant is inviting users to take surveys on whether they are experiencing coronavirus symptoms, even if they are mild.

The data could help anticipate more serious outbreaks at the county level.

He acknowledged the data should only be used for pandemic response and kept private.

It's a nod to concerns by some civil society groups that the pandemic may lead to a broad expansion of government or corporate surveillance.

Zuckerberg said the surveys have generated a million responses a week and will be added into a regularly updated map.

He said Facebook is working with the University of Maryland to take the survey global.
