Health Department says mitigations not meant to hurt businesses

JOHNSON CO (WSIL)--As more businesses say they'll stay open regardless of the new COVID-19 mitigations, the ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Seven Health Department wants to remind you why those restrictions are in place.

With positivity rates region-wide at 9%, health officials say the mitigations should help reduce those rates.

Health officials also said the restrictions are not meant to hurt businesses.

"We want the people to understand that these mitigations are put into place to help slow the spread of this disease. They're not intended to hurt businesses, they're not intedended to hurt communities. But we've got to get a handle on what's going on with COVID-19," said ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Seven Health Department's Shawnna Rhine.

If businesses that are not complying with the mitigations, the health department has a to where you can submit complaints.

According to the Johnson County Sheriff's Department's Facebook page, the ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Seven Health Department contacted the sheriff's department, but they were not advised on how to enforce the rules.

The statement also said the department advises people to keep their distance, wear a mask if you will be within six feet of someone, but "don't expect everyone else to conform."
