SPRINGFIELD (ILLINOIS CAPITOL BUREAU) -- The Illinois Department of Public Health says the state could see approximately 3,400 total cases of novel coronavirus next week if the current trajectory continues.

The projection would be a jump of over 700% of the . A Department spokesperson stated 650 new cases could need hospitalization if the assumption is made that 20% of the new cases are severe.

IDPH states this is a novel virus and information is evolving rapidly, so estimated trajectories could change. Health officials note social distancing measures such as school closures, working from home and ending dine-in options at restaurants could help lower the projection.

Officials say it will still take two weeks to see the effect of any recent actions to stop the spread, as the incubation period is 14 days.
