Walker’s Bluff reaches next step in casino project

CARTERVILLE (WSIL) -- The Walker's Bluff Casino is no closer to approval Thursday, following a special meeting of the Illinois Gaming Board.

Due to the coronavirus, the board decided to delay license approvals for six months.

The casino is currently facing some backlash from some residents because a new road is planned to built through some properties.

Project developers were not happy to hear the news about the delay.

Cynde Bunch from Walker's Bluff Casino Resort said:

"While we are a little disappointed to learn about the possible six-month delay, we completely understand how the pandemic has created major challenges for the Illinois Gaming Board in this process and appreciate the efforts of the board and staff during these difficult times."

One resident, who lives near the project, says he's not too thrilled about the casino.

"They can delay it as long as they would like. I understand it's economic development for the area, which is wonderful, but it's also one of those things that a lot of us live out in the country for reasons other than to have casinos in our backyard," said Mickey Stewart.

The development is projected to cost more than $150 million and provide hundreds of jobs.

The next meeting is November 17th.
