CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- After months of being closed down in the coronavirus pandemic, the reopened Wednesday with limited hours.
"I'm excited that people will be able to come back and enjoy getting fit and healthy again," said Corné Prozesky, Recreational Sports and Services Director.
Because of social distancing, some things are a little different than they were in March.
Some machines have been blocked off in order to keep people six feet apart, and everyone has to wipe down their stations before and after use.
Masks must be worn while walking around the center but can be taken off while working out.
The pool is open, but every other lane has been closed. And fitness rooms now have lower maximum capacities in order to make social distancing easier.
"The health and wellness aspect of it takes care of the mind as well. So, a lot of people have been missing that. Walking outside is not as much fun as being able to swim, or walk around the track, or lifting weights. So, again, we think that it's a very important part of being healthy, not just physically, but for your mind as well," Prozesky said.Â
Many people are excited to be back at the gym.
"Very excited. Been waiting a while. Been just working out at home as I could, but now that it's open it's a great place to go," said SIU student Zac Amenda. Â
While some may be worried about the risks of going to the gym, the precautions make others feel safe.
"I wipe down the machine before I use it, then I wipe it down after I use it. Obviously, social distance just fine, there's like five people in the whole gym. Not worried about getting it here," Amenda said.Â
To keep numbers low, the Rec Center is not currently selling day passes. They're only allowing members to access to the facilities.
