CAPE GIRARDEAU (WSIL) -- Missouri Governor Mike Parson announced Wednesday he will launch a new incentive program to get more people vaccinated.
allows any resident over the age of 12-years-old who has at least one dose of a COVID vaccine to register for the chance to win $10,000.
In a press conference at the State Capitol, Governor Parson announced three categories to be selected from to win cash or education savings account prizes for those who receive a vaccine.
"I'm dependent on you, and your families to make the right choices. We know right now there's going to be a hesitancy, whether it's in Missouri or any other state," he says.
News 3 asked local residents what they think of the incentive.
"I think that the incentive that Governor Parson and the state of Missouri is offering, I think will get a certain more percentage of people to get the vaccination and I'm hoping that does happen," says Cape Girardeau resident Gary Lynch.
Others say they don't like the idea.
"That incentive, with the money, nah. That's just a way to get people vaccinated and then what if there ain't no money?" says Cape Girardeau resident Catherine Gregory.
A total of 900 winners will be selected every two weeks from August 13 until October 8.
Along with the chance to win a prize, local public health departments will be provided funds to give $25 to each person who gets a vaccine.
Governor Parson also strongly encouraged people to talk to their local health officials to be more informed about getting their vaccine.
