CHICAGO (WSIL) Governor JB Pritzker says Illinois State Police have been alerted to be on patrol in regions with heightened COVID-19 restrictions.
On Monday, Governor Pritzker to announce additional COVID-19 mitigations in Region 5 - Southern Illinois. Those restrictions take effect Thursday.
Additional mitigations in Region 7 - Will and Kankakee counties and Region 8 - Kane and DuPage counties .
Some businesses have publicly stated that they do not intend to abide by the mitigations restricting indoor dining and bar service.
The governor says state police can issue citations but will start by giving warnings and asking people to disperse.
Pritzker says the state can take away a business' liquor license, but he's been reluctant do so because of the long-term impact it can have on the business.
“The state police is now alerted to be on patrol in those regions. They have the ability, as you know, to not only issue citations, but, you know, they’ll start by asking people to disperse, and warnings, and so on, but they have the ability to issue citations and also, with the information we get at the state level, we can take away people’s liquor license, which I have been reluctant to do because it has a semi-permanent effect on a business to take away their liquor license, especially for not having followed the regulations that are set out for them. So it will be hard for them to get that license back. But now, we’re going to be making sure that we enforce that," said Gov. Pritzker Wednesday during his daily COVID-19 briefing in Chicago.
On Wednesday, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reported 4,342 new cases of COVID-19 in the state, including 69 additional deaths.
