(WSIL) -- Shawnee Health Service announced new funding Wednesday to help seniors isolated due to COVID-19.
The organization received an Emergency Assistance Services grant from the Illinois Department on Aging.
The funds will go toward purchasing things like food, medical supplies and personal hygiene items. It will also help pay for transportation to medical appointments.
Shawnee Alliance will oversee the distribution of the funding, which staff says is much needed.
"We think it will be enough, but as things develop statewide, that money can always be shifted. So there's always the possibility more or less funding could be shifted to our area, but we don't see anytime in the near future of us running out of the funds," explains Care Coordinator Supervisor Amanda Groaning-Marks.
Shawnee Alliance oversees the care of more than 3,000 seniors in the lower 18 counties of southern Illinois.
