SIU ENROLLMENT

CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- Students at SIU Carbondale will get money back from the university after in-person classes were canceled due to COVID-19.

In a message to students and staff on Friday, the university said, "We have carefully analyzed how the general fee is used, and we have reviewed approaches being taken by other institutions."

Below is an excerpt from that message:

Based on this analysis, we will refund $12 per credit hour to students who were originally enrolled in on-campus classes for the spring semester. This reflects fees for services that were no longer available to students the second half of spring semester. A student’s total fee reimbursement will be based on the number of credit hours taken for the spring semester. For example, a student enrolled for 15 credit hours will receive a refund of $180.

We will also refund two months of the annual parking decal fee for on-campus students who purchased stickers. The amount will range from $10 to $63 depending on the type of parking decal purchased, although the majority of students will receive $23.

Both fee and parking refunds will be applied as credits to student accounts, and any remaining funds will be reimbursed. Reimbursements will be made via direct deposit to either a checking or savings account.

SIU began looking at the in March. Late that month, the university a plan to credit or reimburse up to 50 percent of room and board costs for residence hall students who have not lived on campus since spring break.

According to SIU Carbondale's website:

  • The base tuition rate for incoming SIUC domestic undergraduate students who start Fall 2020 will be $321.25/hour.
  • State and campus policies concerning guaranteed tuition mean that the base tuition rate for continuing or re-entering domestic undergraduates who started Fall 2019 or Fall 2018 will be $321.25/hour, and for those who started Fall 2017 or Fall 2016 will be $315.00/hour.

According to the university's website the for the 2020-2021 academic year is nearly $30,000.

Students with questions about the reimbursements may email [email protected].

NOTE: This story has been modified from its original version which incorrectly mentioned tuition instead of fees in the headline.
