(CNN) -- New research suggests second COVID vaccines are safe for people who exhibited allergic reactions to the first dose.
A study published in the journal "Jama Internal Medicine" looked at 189 patients who had reactions to Pfizer or Moderna's vaccine.
Only 20 percent of them reported reactions to a second dose and they were all described as mild. Even people who had severe anaphylactic reactions to the first dose tolerated a booster well.
The researchers say this likely means reactions to the first dose of MRNA vaccines are not true allergic responses.
About 2 percent of the people who have received those vaccines reported an allergic-type reaction to the first dose.
