(WSIL) -- Travel is picking up again after states reopened and lifted restrictions. With hurricane season approaching and the risk of still contracting COVID-19, what happens if your plans get cancelled?

Carterville Travel Agency, Mindy's Miles Travel Agency, tells News 3 buying travel insurance is the best investment you can make while planning your summer vacations.

Travel insurance protects you from different types of financial losses that occur while traveling, such as cancelled flights or a medical emergency.

Many agencies have various policies that you can choose from that provide all kinds of coverage.

Travel Agent Mindy Combs says she advises her clients to choose one where you can cancel for any reason up until the day of departure. In return, you can get a credit voucher for a future trip or cash back.

"Travel insurance will often reimburse if you had to take a different flight out, that's where travel insurance steps in and helps you get a different flight out if your original flight was cancelled or if you have a property that you have to evacuate and have to relocate," says Combs. "Travel insurance would help with, you know, reimburse with additional expenses."

COVID-19 has impacted the travel insurance market. Some policies are now offering “epidemic coverage in case you are affected by COVID-19 or another global pandemic.

The most important thing to do is make sure you know what is and is not covered in your policy so you can relax while you are on your trip.
