MURPHYSBORO (WSIL) -- Despite COVID-19, animal shelters are still trying to help our furry friends get adopted by using drive-up adoptions.
Meet Troy. Troy is an eight-year-old Pitbull Terrier mix looking for his "furever" family.
"Troy came in right after Wyatt, and Wyatt, you know, was our famous abused case, and Troy was another very abused dog. The sheriff from Pulaski County brought him in," said Diane Daugherty, President of the Board of Directors, at Saint Francis CARE.
Daugherty says when Troy came in they believed he had been hit by a car. "You can see how severely underweight his was, with a dislocated hip, and that owner actually has been prosecuted," explained Daugherty.
Recovering and putting on weight took time, but Daugherty says Troy has made a tremendous recovery.
"He has a little bit of a limp now. We thought he was going to have to have surgery, but Dr. Creese doesn't think that it's really going to help him. He's not in pain, so it's better off that he doesn't have to go through that."
The best thing for Troy now is staying active. "He doesn't need to get stiff. That's why we've never kept him in a kennel. He needs to walk around on it and not let it get stiff. With a dislocation like that, he probably has a little arthritis," added Daugherty.
Troy doesn't let his limp hold him back. "He plays hard and likes to walk and he's very attentive. He's guarding us right now."
Despite his tough past, Daugherty says Troy loves everyone he meets, including kids and other dogs.
"His first years of his life we're obviously very bad, so the last years of his life need to be very, very good," said Daugherty.
