City looking for ways to help residents save on electric bill

(WSIL) -- With Ameren raising their rates on electricity the city of Mount Vernon is looking for ways to help residents save on your electric bill.

The City has worked with the Affordable Gas and Electric Company since 2013 to obtain the best possible electric supply rate. Mayor John Lewis says, if you opt into the city's electric plan you could save a lot each year.

"I'm assuring everybody the city is doing this for the benefit of all of our citizens using the power of numbers, to get a better rate. And like I said 80% of the time we've won that bet, we've saved our customers 2-3 hundred thousand dollars since 2013." said Mayor John Lewis. 

Lewis also says if residents choose to opt out and find another provider they should choose a reputable company like Ameren to avoid scams.
