CARTERVILLE, Ill. (WSIL) -- A local energy organization is offering a smart device to their customers to help keep money in their pockets.

Ameren Illinois is introducing to their customers a free Google Nest thermostat, to not only keep more money in their pockets, but to also give them more options in the palm of their hand.

The Google Nest thermostat is designed to help save you money by adjusting the temperature in your home while you are away. It's a feature officials with Ameren are jumping aboard on to help their customers with.

"As we start getting into these new technologies, we're just looking for ways to save, Ameren Senior Program Supervisor Stephanie Robinson said. "And that's what it's all about, ways to save. So again, the promotion that we're offering right now runs through the end of the year."

Ameren Illinois officials say along with the smart thermostat, it's also cost efficient to make sure your home is air tight.

"You want to make sure that you are checking for air leaks, you know, in your windows, under your doors. Get those sealed and caulked. You want to make sure that you are washing your clothes in cold water. You also want to make sure if you have your fireplaces going, you know, turn those fireplaces on. That'll help to heat up the home a little bit."

In addition to the free thermometer, their customers will also receive a smart socket. For more information, you can find it on their .
