(WSIL) -- Due to the pandemic, people are expected to online shop more than ever.

If you're waiting until Cyber Monday, here's how to avoid online scams:

  • Be careful of fraudulent sites that may be spoofing a real business
  • Look out for "phishing" emails. These are fake emails shoppers get that look like real coupons.
  • Do not shop with public Wi-Fi.
  • If a deal looks to good to be true, it probably is.

"Try not to use your debit card, try to use credit cards, 'cause most credit cards have better online protection than debit cards do. It's a lot easier to stop the payments on it than it is with debit cards," said John A. Logan cyber security expert Mark Rogers.

According to Comparitech, over 5,000 new sites registered between November 1st and 20th using the keyword “Black Friday will most likely be scams.
