SIKESTON, Mo.-- September is Hunger Action Month and the Southeast Missouri Food Bank is looking to the community to help them make a dent in hunger in the sixteen counties they serve.
The national organization Feeding America has a goal of encouraging individuals to join them in performing one million actions across the country to end hunger. During the month-long campaign, Southeast Missouri Food Bank is hoping to raise awareness and inspiring action in its 16-county service area. According to them every action counts, whether it’s donating, advocating, volunteering or spreading the word online.Â
The USDA says the region has some of the highest rates of hunger in the state as high as 35.5 percent for childhood hunger in Pemiscot County. SEMO Food Bank serves seven of the 10 most food insecure counties in Missouri. The USDA estimates 1 in 7 people and 1 in 5 children experienced food insecurity in 2022. Those numbers are even higher in southeast Missouri, with 1 in 6 households facing hunger.
Anyone can get help locally through actions like getting involved in the Go orange for Hunger Action Month on September 10th by wearing orange which is the color of hunger awareness. Businesses can also use orange lighting during September. Be sure to post on social media and tag SEMO Food Bank!
