CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A 21-year-old pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder on Tuesday, in relation to a stabbing investigation back in February.
Jackson County State's Attorney Joseph Cervantez said Cody Simon, 21, pleaded guilty to the attempted murder charge, exactly three months after the incident took place in Carbondale.
In an earlier release, Carbondale Police Department said the incident happened on February 21 at 12:07 a.m. Officers went to the 900-block of East Park Street where they had a report of a battery taking place.
Officers found a victim with multiple stab wounds, Carbondale police said. Officers then helped give aid to the victim until an ambulance got to the scene. The ambulance then took the victim to the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Police said the victim had serious injuries.
Simon was taken into custody later in the day as a suspect in the incident. He was accused of stabbing the victim multiple times during a personal dispute.
Cervantez said Simon is scheduled to be sentenced on August 21, 2024. He could face 6 to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, Cervantez noted.
