PADUCAH, Ky. -- A 34-year-old is now in jail facing several charges including rape and strangulation in western Kentucky.
The Paducah Police Department said a woman told police that she and Martin J. Smith, 34 of Paducah, were in an argument on Saturday morning when the incident took place.
Smith faces allegations of assaulting, choking and raping the woman. The woman also reported to police that Smith allegedly dragged her into the bathroom by her hair when she tried to escape.
Police said the woman later escaped in the afternoon and went to the police department to report what happened.
She was also taken to a local hospital for treatment for some injuries.
Smith was arrested Sunday night when an officer saw him walking along Kentucky Avenue behind the police department. Police said Smith was intoxicated and would not give his name to them.
Smith was taken to the McCracken County Regional Jail where he faces charges of first-degree rape/domestic violence, first-degree unlawful imprisonment, first-degree strangulation and fourth-degree assault/domestic violence, and on a charge of alcohol intoxication.
