Man charged in Mt. Vernon double shooting

MOUNT VERNON (WSIL) -- One man is in custody after a double shooting in Mt. Vernon.

The shooting happened on Wednesday, July 29 at around 4:20 p.m. near the 2800 block of College street.

Police dispatch received a 911 call reporting gunshots fired and a person lying on the ground. Upon arrival, police found two people had been shot. Both victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

After the investigation, officers took 44-year-old Alvin C. Smallwood into custody. During a search of his home at 2812 College st, a firearm and additional evidence were located.

Smallwood is being charged with two counts of Aggravated Battery with a firearm, Armed Violence, and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon with bond to be set.
