Williamson County State’s Attorney recommended for federal post

(WSIL) -- The Williamson County State's Attorney could be getting a new job.

U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) and Tammy Duckworth (D-Illinois) have sent a list of names to the White House to consider for two U.S. Attorney positions in the Central and Southern Districts and three U.S. Marshal positions.

For the Southern District of Illinois U.S. Attorney the senators recommended Williamson County's Brandon Zanotti.

Ann Callis, a former Chief Circuit judge in Madison County and current attorney, along with Rachelle Crowe, a state senator for the 56th District and former Madison County State's Attorney, are also nominated for the post.

Zanotti has served since 2014 as the State’s Attorney for Williamson County.  From 2012-2014, he served as an administrative law judge and arbitrator for the Illinois Workers� Compensation Commission.  From 2009-2012 he practiced law at the firm Feirich/Mager/Green/Ryan in Carbondale.  He has served as an assistant professor of practice at SIU School of Law since 2018, teaching courses in pre-trial advocacy and client counseling. 

“We appreciate the opportunity to provide assistance and input in filling these important positions, and we look forward to working with you to ensure a fair and swift confirmation process after you submit nominations to the Senate,” the Senators wrote in a  to President Biden.

Process of reaching the nominations:

  • Three screening committees created to review candidates for U.S. Attorney and U.S. Marshal positions in Illinois. 
  • Candidates evaluated
    • Professional records, questionnaires, references, interviews reviewed
  • Senators Durbin & Duckworth interview finalists, make recommendations to White House
  • Reviewed by Senate Judiciary Committee; Receive vote
  • If approved, nomination will receive vote by full Senate
