Woman Arrested After Deadly Pedestrian vs Vehicle Crash in Jefferson County

DIX, Ill. -- A woman faces a charge in relation to a deadly pedestrian crash in Jefferson County on Monday.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to the parking lot of the Dollar General in Dix at 8:05 p.m. on September 2 for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

The sheriff's office alleges Jeffrey D. Howes, 49 of Centralia, was hit by his own vehicle which was driven by his spouse, Melissa K. Howes, 54 of Centralia.

Multiple agencies arrived at the scene to help assist with the incident. These agencies include members with the Jefferson County Fire Protection District and Litton Ambulance.

Jeffrey Howes was later pronounced dead at the SSM Good Samaritan Hospital, authorities reported.

The sheriff's office alleges there was evidence of alcohol impairment with Melissa Howes.

Melissa Howes was arrested and faces a charge of Aggravated DUI Involving a Death.

She was taken to the Jefferson County Justice Center and had a court hearing on September 3, at 1:30 p.m.
