CARTERVILLE, Ill. (WSIL) -- Students and staff members at the Carterville Junior High School (CJHS) are preparing for their 15th annual Veterans Day luncheon.

The luncheon is taking place starting at 11:45 a.m. through 1:30 p.m. on Friday, November 8, at the Carterville Junior High School.

Veterans from across the school district, or who are family to a Carterville Junior High student, are invited to the lunch event. There will be plenty of food on hand, refreshments and a dessert, along with patriotic music.

Gabe Herbst is a teacher at the junior high. He says it's important to honor their veterans and recalls the respect they've shown them in past events.

"And we just applaud them for their service, and that’s usually a real tearful moment, and it’s really moving overall.

Both Myner Smith and Cameron Dinga are 8th grade students at CJHS. They say it's important to show respect to veterans and learn from them.

“I think it’s good that we learn what they did and what they have done and connect with them," Smith said.

“They might think we don’t care what they went through, even though we care. And we all like to learn what they went through because they help us," Dinga stated. "They are the reason we get to have what we have everyday.
