ULLIN, IL (WSIL) -- Upcoming Changes to guidelines for obtaining a Commercial Drivers License are expected to increase safety on our nation's roadways.
As demand increases for truck drivers, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is requiring schools to register and follow a set of safety standards more stringent than what's currently in place.
Shawnee Community College Truck Driving Coordinator Kelly Jennings welcomes the changes. He says just because a person obtains a CDL, that alone does not make them a professional driver.
"Once you get a CDL you still have a lot of learning to do to become what the industry says is a professional truck driver. / We here at Shawnee College, we want to put safe drivers on the road, that's our main priority is the safety of the public."
Jennings adds, more truckers are foregoing the CB radio, which is reducing the communication between drivers on road conditions ahead.
