...FLOOD WARNING NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM CDT THIS EVENING...

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.

* WHERE...A portion of southern Illinois, including the following
counties, Franklin, Hamilton, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Perry,
Pulaski, Union, Wayne and Williamson.

* WHEN...Until 700 PM CDT Sunday.

* IMPACTS...Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying
and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Low-water
crossings are inundated with water and may not be passable.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- At 817 AM CDT, Even though the heavy rain has ended,
substantial flooding continues across much of the warned
area. Between 5 and 9 inches of rain have fallen since the
start of the event on Wednesday. Additional light rainfall
amounts up to one tenth of an inch are possible in the warned
area.
- Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Carbondale, Marion, Mount Vernon, Herrin, West Frankfort,
Murphysboro, Benton, Du Quoin, Pinckneyville, Carterville,
Fairfield, Anna, Johnston City, Mcleansboro, Christopher,
Jonesboro, Vienna, Rend Lake Area, Sesser and Zeigler.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded
roads. Find an alternate route.

...FREEZE WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY
MORNING...

* WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 25 to 30 degrees
possible. Everyone should see a 32 degree low or close to it.

* WHERE...All of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western
Kentucky, and southeast Missouri.

* WHEN...From late Monday night through Tuesday morning.

* IMPACTS...Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other
sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor
plumbing.

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.

...The Flood Warning is extended for the following rivers in
Illinois...

Big Muddy River near Plumfield affecting Franklin and Williamson
Counties.

.One more round of moderate rainfall is expected today before we
begin to dry out. The Big Muddy River will rise above flood stage
this afternoon and crest next week.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Caution is urged when walking near riverbanks.

Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive
cars through flooded areas.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

NOTICE...

* WHAT...Moderate flooding is forecast.

* WHERE...Big Muddy River near Plumfield.

* WHEN...From this afternoon until further notice.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- At 10:00 AM CDT Saturday the stage was 18.1 feet.
- Forecast...The river will rise above flood stage this
afternoon to 28.5 feet early Monday morning. It will then
fall Tuesday evening. It will rise to 28.1 feet early
Wednesday afternoon. It will then fall again but remain above
flood stage.
- Flood stage is 20.0 feet.
- Flood History...This crest compares to a previous crest of
28.6 feet on 05/02/2017.

Local students surprised with SIU Chancellor Scholarship

(WSIL) -- Several local high school students received SIU Carbondale's Chancellor's Scholarship Tuesday. 

The scholarship covers tuition, room and board and other mandatory fees for 4 years. 

SIU Chancellor Austin Lane visited 7 area high schools. He said it's important to meet face-to-face with these students because they're the future leaders of SIU and will one day talk to other incoming students. 

"Being able to surprise students with a scholarship that will really allow them to go from orientation to graduation and hopefully get a start on life is just a phenomenal thing. It's another example of our committment to making sure we are red-carpeting our students right here in our own backyard," said Chancellor Lane.

A total of 35 chancellor scholarships were given away Tuesday. One was awarded to a home-schooled students.

Lane says the scholarships should be a reminder of all the extra work the students put in and now know it paid off. 

"We've had some trips where their parents are present. And you see tears, you see tears of joy. You see sort of an exhale from the student because they realize all their hard work has paid off and they're being rewarded for it, so we're really excited about that," explained Lane.

  • Anna: Alexandria Little, Anna-Jonesboro Community High School
  • Cobden: Leslie Morales, Cobden High School
  • Energy: Kaelin Rowland, Carterville High School
  • Herrin: Brenna Gusewelle, Herrin High School
  • Makanda: Elli Oploh, home school
  • Marion: Jake Bruce, Marion High School
  • Vienna: Ayden Rademaker, Vienna High School

News 3 was present for the surprise in Vienna and Marion. Cobden Jr-Sr High posted video of their student receiving the surprise.
