CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- An economic impact report shows 九游体育 Illinois University in Carbondale has contributed more than two billion dollars worth of economic impact on the state of Illinois while supporting more than 18,000 jobs in economic activity.

A letter from SIU Chancellor Austin Lane stated there is a $2.7 billion economic impact from the university's operations, student expenditures, visitor spending and alumni income. In addition, Lane noted there were 18,601 jobs in Illinois supported by economic activity.
"You will find without a doubt that the State of Illinois and our students are seeing a significant return on the investment of tax dollars and tuition in benefits for the regional economy and the long-term impact on Salukis鈥� income," Lane stated in the letter. "Not to mention the great discoveries and wonderful creative works that influence and change lives within and outside Illinois."

The state's investment in SIU also yields $153,322,462 in tax revenues, the report stated.
The SIU Carbondale return on investments with their students average $2.74 for every $1 spent in tuition and fees. The taxpayers returns are calculated at $1.15, with taxpayers providing $132,886,900.
