SIU MFA Students to Showcase Work at Saint Louis Art Museum

ST. LOUIS, MO (WSIL) 鈥� Nine talented Master of Fine Arts students from Southern Illinois University Carbondale are set to present their innovative creative research at the prestigious Saint Louis Art Museum on Friday, Jan. 31.

Titled 鈥淭ranslations: Creative Research in the Media Arts,鈥� the program will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. in Farrell Auditorium as part of the museum鈥檚 popular Free Fridays series. This curated presentation spans a variety of mediums, including film, sound, performance, photography, and print media, offering audiences an immersive exploration of modern artistry contextualized by the artists themselves.

鈥淭his is such a rare and valuable opportunity for our students to share their work at an internationally renowned institution,鈥� said Kevin Mercer, assistant professor of digital arts and media in SIU Carbondale鈥檚 School of Media Arts.

Mercer revealed that the Saint Louis Art Museum selected the students' program after a meeting with program coordinator MaryClaire Pavlick, during which he highlighted the exceptional research and creativity fostered within SIU鈥檚 MFA program.

The students collaborated to develop the theme of translation, delving into its many dimensions, including language and communication, storytelling, physical and digital realities, and shared generational experiences.

Drew McGinniss (experimental, interactive film) 鈥� Greensboro, North Carolina

Saba Raissian (performance art) 鈥� Tehran, Iran

Shruti Rao (documentary film) 鈥� Bangalore, Karnataka, India

Drew Yepsen (documentary film) 鈥� Peoria, Illinois

This event promises to be an unforgettable evening for art enthusiasts and newcomers alike, showcasing cutting-edge media art from some of SIU鈥檚 brightest emerging talents.
