MT. VERNON, ILLINOIS (WSIL) -- You can see what life was like in the early 1800's while enjoying some tasty dessert.

The is holding its strawberry festival and plant sale. Those who come out can enjoy strawberry shortcake on their choice of traditional biscuit, round sponge cakes, angel food cake or pie crust.

A variety of plants will also be up for sale, that village volunteers say, are much cheaper than big box stores.

Lucy Baker, the museum curator, says its a lot of hard work to keep the village going, especially when its all volunteer. But, seeing visitors --young to seniors-- enjoy their time makes the effort all worth it.

"Some little kid will say 'oh I just love to come here,'" she explains. "Or older people who devote their time to working as docents. It does mean a lot to the community, and we appreciate all the support that we get."

During the festival and plant sale, the historic buildings will be open for visitors to tour:

  • One-room school house
  • Church
  • Jail
  • Medical office
  • Log cabin
  • General store
  • Blacksmith shop
  • Print shop

Baker believes historical villages like this are needed, so kids can learn about the past in a fun way.

"It makes history come more alive," she says. "It's not just what they read in their text books. When I was studying history in grade school, it seemed to me, it was all battles, presidents and scandals that didn't mean a thing to me. But this shows you how people lived."

Funds raised go toward keeping the village running like the electric bill, which is around $600 a month, heating and educational programs.

The strawberry festival and plant sale is taking place on Saturday, May 22nd from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Or while supplies last.
