WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. (WSIL) A family survived a lightning strike while they were traveling down a highway in Williamson County.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office said they responded to a vehicle which had been hit by lightning on April 5, at 5:42 p.m. along Route 13 near Route 166.

When deputies arrived, the family of three was standing outside of the vehicle after it was struck by lightning, the sheriff’s office said.

The family did not have any reported injuries.

It was reported they heard a loud pop when the lightning struck, then the vehicle filled with smoke.

The sheriff’s office said the lightning disabled the vehicle’s electrical system, then exploded a portion of the rear bumper and exhaust system. It also left a hole in the top of the vehicle.

The vehicle was towed from the scene. Firefighters with the Williamson County Fire Department assisted on scene.
