BENTON, Ill. (WSIL) -- The fate of one local fire department's Dalmatian is still in question.

Knox the dog has been part of the Benton Fire Department for the past two years. Last week, a city commissioner pushed for his removal on the grounds he was never approved by city council and could be deemed a liability.

The city council plans to discuss approving Knox at its next meeting, Monday, December 23rd.

There's been a huge outpouring across local social media pages. Many people have been calling for Knox's return.

The Benton Fire Department addressed the issue, saying:

The Benton Firefighters LiUNA Local 773 would like to thank the Benton community and ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois as a whole for the overwhelming support that has been shown for us and Knox over the past week. While the last 7 days have been difficult and stressful, knowing that we have so many people showing so much love has made it easier and given us hope. At this time, we feel confident that there will be a positive outcome following lengthy discussions amongst ourselves and city officials. Additionally, we would like to thank Public Safety Commissioner Don Storey for listening to our concerns and considering the possibility of bringing Knox back. With that being said, we would like to remind everyone of the regularly scheduled council meeting at which Knox will be discussed will be held Monday, December 23 at 8:30 am and available to livestream via Facebook. Any positive support would be appreciated.
