Final day of excessive heat

WSIL(Carterville, Ill.)-- This morning, we are tracking more warm temperatures, with morning lows once again in the upper 70s and lower 80s. Most of us are seeing partly cloudy skies.

Today, we still have an excessive heat warning in place. However, this will be the final day of excessive heat. You can expect to once again see highs in the mid 90s for most of us, and heat index will be between 110 and 115 once again today. However, a little more cloud cover may help to keep heat index values slightly lower.聽

We will be mostly dry this morning, but we will see isolated to scattered showers likely after 2 or 3 PM, first in our eastern most counties. These storms will be associated with a line of showers and thunderstorms that will develop to our northwest, and track southeast. Right now, it does appear that the strongest storms with this line should remain to our east, but it's something we will have to monitor. We could certainly see them track more west.聽

This is why there is a broad level 2 risk of severe weather for most of southern Illinois and western Kentucky.

Later this evening, likely after 6:00PM , we will see more scattered showers and storms form, and a few of these could be on the strong to severe side. Storms will likely last through the last night hours as a cold front tracks from northwest to southeast overnight tonight.聽

We will see temperatures cool behind this front for tomorrow. Lows will be in the lower 70s, but highs will likely be in the lower to mid 80s tomorrow afternoon.聽

We could see a few scattered showers last tomorrow morning, but we will be dry later in the afternoon.聽

The weekend will be dry and seasonable with mostly sunny skies.聽
