Local Health Department Reminds Residents to get checked for Colorectal Cancer

Colon Cancer up in Southern IL

Anna (WSIL) -- As cases of colorectal cancer go up in Southern Illinois, Southern 7 Health Department is reminding us early detection is key to survival.

The department is aiding in early detection by offering free Fecal Immunochemical Tests, or FIT kits to those 45 and older who haven't had a colonoscopy in the last 10 years. The at-home kit doesn't require a prescription.

It tests for traces of blood in stool, which could be an indication of polyps or cancer. The Southern 7 Health Department says many people are missing their regular doctor appointment, which includes early cancer screening.

"If colorectal cancer is not detected, especially in those early stages, we could see anywhere from 4500 or more deaths from colorectal cancer over the next 10 years. So getting the screening now is so important, getting it when you're younger is important, especially if you have a history of colorectal cancer in your family." said Shawnna Rhine, Community Outreach Coordinator, Southern 7 Health Department.

The test kits are available at any Southern 7 Health clinic.

You can also register to have a kit sent to you. For more information head to
