METROPOLIS (WSIL)---Most 11-year-old girls don't spend their free time collecting donations of pads and tampons for high schools, but Lilly Thompson is on a mission to make period poverty a thing of the past.
Now, she's working on phase two of her project, partnering with local businesses on her first period drive.
She's partnered with Kirchhoff's Bakery and Frosted by Molli, and plans to collect enough products to donate to two high schools.
"We are dropping off to Paducah Tillman High School, and they have 30 confirmed homeless teens in need, so we are going to be resupplying them throughout the school year to help them stay in school," said Thompson.
Thompson will also be donating to Massac County High school, and has been hard at work making cycle kits, which are small bags filled with enough products that should help a girl every month.
Donating to the drive is easy, Thompson set up specially marked bins where people can donate products that will directly go towards girls in the community.
And Thompson is glad to see how far the project is expanding.
"It feels really good because I'm helping more girls in need and I know that they're really grateful," said Thompson.
Thompson said she is looking forward to helping the project grow and sticks to her signature catch phrase.
"The last thing a girl should worry about, is her period," Thompson said.
