SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WSIL) -- Health officials issued an urgent advisory for individuals potentially exposed to measles at certain locations. Those not immune should contact their health care provider for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) immediately.
The Illinois Department of Public Health said exposed individuals which are unvaccinated against measles should talk with their doctor about getting the MMR vaccine. Health officials said receiving the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine within 72 hours can prevent the development of measles.
For those unable to receive the MMR vaccine, such as children under 6 months, pregnant individuals, or those severely immunocompromised, immunoglobulin is available within six days of exposure. If symptoms develop, individuals should inform their health care provider before visiting any medical facility to avoid further exposure risks.
