Marguerite Henry: jefferson county historical society

JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL (WSIL) -- The is announcing its upcoming Illinois Humanities program. 

The Jefferson County Historical Society will host Kari Dillingham for "Haunted ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois"

Jamie Poorman of Wind & Sky: Illinois Author Marguerite Henry and the Wild Ponies of Chincoteague Island. 

Poorman will explore the life and legacy of Illinois author Marguerite Henry. Henry, born in Milwaukee in 1902, moved to Illinois after her marriage and wrote many of her famous works there.

She published 59 books, mostly animal tales for children, and won many awards, including the Newbery Medal. In 1946, she purchased a foal named Misty during the annual "Pony Penning" week on Chincoteague Island.

Misty lived with Henry in Illinois for over 10 years, capturing the hearts of many.

Jamie Poorman: Jefferson County Historical Society

Poorman is the Head Librarian at Marshall Public Library and a dedicated genealogist and local historian. She and her family run a small homestead with veggies, goats, Saint Bernards, and a Chincoteague Pony. 

The presentation is Saturday, September 14th starting at 2 p.m. It's taking place at the Schweinfurth museum. This event is free and open to the public, but donations are welcomed.
