House explosion in southeast Missouri leaves one dead

UPDATE: 11:00 p.m.

What started as a quiet morning in Wyatt, Missouri quickly turned to tragedy. An explosion sent a home in the middle of town into flames, with ten people inside.

Neighbors could hear both the explosion and the ensuing chaos and smell smoke as it seeped into their own homes.

鈥淚t was just smoked out. the whole town was foggy," said Kahiiya Dunnigan. "We could smell the scent through the vents. It was sad, walking up and seeing blood on the ground, seeing them on the bed and seeing them shake and cry, it was sad.鈥�

鈥淪he was just waking up, drinking coffee and she heard the explosion and come outside," said Sam Bowls. "That鈥檚 when she saw the damage on the house and uh, the little girl was out in the yard rolling around and crying for her mama. she was bad.鈥�

Around the corner and down the street, two men from a recovery home heard it all, too. They immediately jumped into action.

Phillip Swift and Tyler Larkins and Tyler Larkins helped get children from the flames and smoke even before first responders arrived.

鈥淚t was an inferno. The mom was in the yard. I was the first to get to the yard, the first to run up there and when I got up there there was a little girl at the window."

He helped the little girl out, and when he was done he covered his face and ran in and got the other one. At some point, I ended up with an infant. But they all made it out alive, we got them out safe.鈥�

According to officials from the Wyatt Fire Department, the children wouldn鈥檛 have made it out of the house if not for the actions of men down the street.

At least three fire marshals were on scene Monday to investigate the cause.

UPDATE: 4:00 p.m.

The Mississippi County Sheriff's Office is releasing more details on Monday's explosion.聽

The Sheriff's Office said when they arrived on the scene 10 victims were located, ages 6 months to mid-twenties. A man in his twenties died in the explosion. An autopsy is scheduled later this week to determine the exact cause of death.聽

A preliminary investigation revealed the cause of the explosion was a gas leak in the home. It hasn't been determined where the leak was coming from.聽

The Missouri State Fire Marshal Service, Mississippi County Sheriff鈥檚 Office, and the Gas Commission investigation unit are looking into the exact cause of the explosion.

UPDATE: 2:30 P.M.

Fire Marshals on scene confirmed to News 3 at least one person has died.

Multiple Marshals are at the scene of the explosion trying to determine a cause.聽

ORIGINAL STORY

WYATT, MISSOURI (WSIL) -- First responders are on scene of a house explosion and fire in Wyatt, Missouri. Wyatt is 10 minutes from Charleston, Missouri.聽

Responders with the Mississippi County Sheriff's Office on scene told News 3 10 people were inside the home during the incident that took place just after 7 a.m.

All range from 6-months-old to adults and are either severely injured or deceased. First responders are still working to confirm fatalities.聽

Two victims were flown to hospitals and the rest were taken to hospitals in Cape Girardeau, Memphis, Tennessee and Paducah.聽

News 3 has a crew on scene and will update this story as more details are available.
